   a. [Gr. gymno`spermos; gymno`s naked + spe`rma seed: cf. F.
   gymnosperme.] (Bot.)
   (a) Having naked seeds, or seeds not inclosed in a capsule or
       other vessel.
   (b) Belonging to the class of plants consisting of
       gymnosperms.
