   An American marine fish (Brevoortia tyrannus) of the
   Herring family (Clupeidae), chiefly valuable for its oil
   and as a component of fertilizers; -- called also
   mossbunker, bony fish, chebog, pogy, hardhead,
   whitefish, etc.
