Chipmunk \Chip"munk`\, n. [Indian name.] (Zool.)
   A squirrel-like animal of the genus Tamias, sometimes
   called the striped squirrel, chipping squirrel, {ground
   squirrel}, hackee. The common species of the United States
   is the Tamias striatus. [Written also chipmonk,
   chipmuck, and chipmuk.]
