Hackberry \Hack"ber`ry\ (h[a^]k"b[e^]r`r[y^]), n. (Bot.)
   A genus of trees (Celtis) related to the elm, but bearing
   drupes with scanty, but often edible, pulp. {Celtis
   occidentalis} is common in the Eastern United States. --Gray.
