oestrus \oes"trus\, n. [L., a gadfly; also, frenzy, fr. Gr. ?
   gadfly; hence, sting, fury, insane desire, frenzy.]
   1. (Zool.) A genus of gadflies. The species which deposits
      its larvae in the nasal cavities of sheep is {oestrus
      ovis}.
